New 2008 Sea Ray 290 Amberjack Discount Sea Ray Prices Low 290 Amberjack Payments All Colors Options Worldwide Delivery What's the difference between an open-water family cruiser and a big-game fishing machine? Not a thing, if you're talking about the new Sea Ray 290 Amberjack. Boasting a wide 10-foot-6-inch beam, generous 250-gallon fuel capacity, well-appointed interior and loads of storage, this is one seriously multitalented sport utility vessel. Family and friends will love it for leisurely sun-and-fun outings. Add the optional fishing package, and you may have trouble getting your buddies off your back about the next offshore angling run. A large, open cockpit offers abundant room for moving around while also providing plenty of seating for all. The captain and navigator can sit or stand side-by-side - their choice - thanks to the double helm seat with flip-up bolster. Guests have their choice of a portside back-to-back lounger or a convenient aft bench that easily folds away to make more space for fishing, diving or other active pursuits. At the helm, SmartCraft diagnostic instruments help you keep an eye on depth, fuel usage, engine hours and more, or you can upgrade to a SmartCraft VesselView display for even greater versatility. Twin 260-hp MerCruiser Bravo III digital throttle and shift (DTS) sterndrives mean solid performance, but the 290 Amberjack also offers something you won't find on competitive models - the ability to pick from gas, diesel, or a V-drive inboard option for fewer in-water parts and less maintenance. So, have it your way. When it's time to wet your whistle, fix some drinks at the wet bar with its teak countertop. The transom has an insulated bin with hinged lid that makes a convenient cooler or fish box. A transom door leads to the wide, extended swim platform offering prime-time waterfront acreage. To help keep things cool on deck, the 290 Amberjack comes with an aluminum sport spoiler with bimini, or optional fiberglass hardtop. Plentiful storage is available throughout the cockpit, beneath both the double helm and lounger seats, as well as in the transom. There's more storage in the air-conditioned cabin - even a clever mid-berth that can be rigged as a 'utility room' with lockable doors, shelves and rod racks. It's a sportsman's dream. But the real story below deck is the designer-decorated cabin. Contemporary fabrics, cherry-finished wood interior cabinetry and matching hardware will make you feel right at home. Stay-aboard comforts include a galley with microwave/coffeemaker and refrigerator, opposing dinette that converts into a sleeper, forward V-berth with privacy curtain, and a stand-up fiberglass head with shower, sink, vanity and VacuFlush system. The mid-berth with double bunk is perfect for the kids. No other boat in the class offers this additional space. If you're the kind of person who likes to keep his or her options open, you'll love the list of upgrades available on this craft. For angling aficionados, the fishing package is a must-have. It adds a bait-prep station, live well, aluminum arch with hardtop and rocket launchers, electronically-actuated canvas sunshade, extra rod holders and seawater washdown. For an extra touch of class, get the teak cockpit decking. Make night moves easier with optional underwater lights or a remote-controlled spotlight. For cruising, fishing, diving or just good old fashioned fun on the water, the new Sea Ray 290 Amberjack is a grand slam. Boston Whalers 255 Conquest is the perfect boat for people living waterside. Those in the happy position of having a vacancy for a 25-30 footer on a pontoon are going to find plenty of appeal in this boat. Especially people keen on off shore fishing with a bit of day cruising thrown in. Some may see the 255 Conquests 2.66m beam as unfortunate. It means it isnt (readily) trailable in Australia. On the one hand, partly because it is so beamy, the 255 Conquest gives an impression of being a larger boat than its 26 11 (LOA inc. bowsprit). It handles and steers like a smaller boat. But it rides and deals with the sea as if it were bigger. Ive tested boats 3m longer than a Boston Whaler 255 Conquest that banged and bounced badly over choppy water more than this boat does. The Boston Whalers formidable (foam fi lled) structural integrity and a sophisticated hull shape (Boston Whaler call it Accutrack) featuring a distinctive curving chine and fine bow, means that the new 255 Conquest is amazingly quiet over the water.

Layout
Inside, the 255 Conquest is set-up as a day boat. A dinette easily seats two couples or a couple plus kids. What the 255 Conquest doesnt have though is a galley. At night, the dinette converts to a generous berth for two. There are two toilet options, a portable type with deck pump out, or a Vacuflush loo with holding tank and dockside pump-out. The cabin doors are bi-fold with a big cutaway into the bulkhead to allow for entry without bumping your head; and they can be securely locked. Theres a small sink against the cabin bulkhead, rod racks along the sides, insect screened portholes and hatch. There is no hot shower, but theres the option of a (cold) cockpit shower (pressurised freshwater is standard). This is an enlarged version of the classic Aussie half cab. But it offers levels of comfort and safety off shore that our trailable half or cuddy cabs cant match. With the fibreglass hardtop and full clears fitted to our test boat, there was adequate shelter for the helm and passenger. Theres a pair of buckets for helm and one passenger, and behind them a smaller pair of buckets facing aft. A tackle box is set into the side of the cabin beside each. Its comfortable either sitting or standing at the big, stainless steel wheel. Our test boat was fitted with a 250hp Mercury Verado supercharged four-stroke outboard. It came with power-assisted steering and Mercurys industry leading SmartCraft instrumentation, along with digital throttle and shift controls. These contributed to the 255 Conquest being more like a 6 or 6.5m classic Aussie half cab to drive.

Sedan Bridge. There is nothing sexy about the name. After all, flybridge motoryachts under 50 feet rarely get the honor of being called beautiful. But the newly designed 44 Sedan Bridge is just that. A stylish lady with world-class refinements and a luxurious feel that you typically can only get from across the pond. Unfortunately, this yacht is so new, that we could not perform our rigorous test schedule. Instead, we were treated to a royal tour, so lets see whats new. Her great looks are due in part to Sea Rays in-house 5-axis milling machine technology that company designers and engineers are using to style tomorrows yachts. This equipment cuts shapes using a computer to produce smooth flowing lines in the decks and hull of a boats mold master. All this power is evident in the completely re-tooled 44, which also incorporates the latest in engines, electronics and comfort systems.

Interior Design
This boat sleeps six adults in absolute comfort, and does it with a Euro / Cosmopolitan flair. The wood planked flooring, black leatherette seating and stainless steel accents are stunning. The saloon is broken into two levels, the main and lower levels for convenience and better flow. Conversation space is what the main level is all about. Long couches flank both port and starboard sides in the 44. The port side couch is really a folding sleeper sofa for two. Just forward of the port side couch is a cozy L-shaped dinette that is elevated slightly to provide a panoramic view of the outside world. Meals will take on a new flavor when you swing the lavish wood and polished steel dinning table into place. This table is a work of art all in itself, as it can fold and rotate out of place, giving you and your guests more room to relax. From almost any seat in the saloon, you have a view of the flat screen LCD TV and entertainment center that packs everything one might need for added ambiance while aboard.

Galley
Stepping down a few steps into the lower level, youll find the galley. This area received the same design treatment as the saloon, with wood trimmed cabinets, black faux granite counter tops and stainless steel sink and hardware. The sink and two-burner cook top are hidden under removable panels that stow neatly under the counter in special holders. All your basic needs are covered in the galley with its refrigerator, freezer, coffee maker and microwave/convection oven combo.

Living Quarters
The lower level also contains the staterooms and heads. To port is the guest stateroom that has two twin bunks. With the help of a filler board and cushions, these two beds convert into a very roomy queen berth. The guest head is located forward of the guest stateroom and has its own private entrance. Inside youll find lots of space at the vanity or in the separate stand up shower. The owners cabin is all the way forward on the lower level, and features a queen-sized island berth with tons of storage compartments everywhere and an ensuite head. This head is slightly larger than the guest head, but comparably equipped with a vacu-flush toilet and a shower nozzle thats adjustable for skippers and mates of all sizes.

Cockpit
When its time to leave the air-conditioned comfort of the 44's interior, you pass through a sliding glass door at the rear of the saloon, and are greeted by a spacious cockpit. A long transom seat provides storage for your gear or can be removed should you decide to do some blue-water fishing. Landing your catch will be easier, thanks to a big transom door and a wide swim platform at the stern. Moving up to the flybridge is easy and safe thanks to large steps for sure-footed confidence in rough seas. Located on this upper level is a U-shaped settee that has enough room for up to six people to enjoy cocktails and meals. Or, you can convert the seating into a giant sun lounge. The captain will enjoy the helm, which is laid out in typical Sea Ray style; everything right where you need it. The gauges, controls and navigation, are all right at your fingertips. To help the skipper and mate stay comfortable, wrap-around bucket seats with flip-up bolsters replace the typical bench seating that is found on many yachts. As for how this beauty feels under way, youre going to have to wait until shes ready.

Talk about a tall ship. Indeed, the most striking characteristic of Sea Ray's new 36 Sedan Bridge is her height a commanding 18 feet, 6 inches above the water. Excellent sight lines abound from the flybridge, not only for docking and maneuvering, but also from the standpoint of pure enjoyment of your surroundings. I thought all this windage would have a negative effect on control, but it wasn't the case. The wind was gusting between 15 and 20 knots on the day I tested the 36 Sedan Bridge out of Sea Ray's Sykes Creek manufacturing facility in Merritt Island, Florida. She handled like a charm on a wide section of the Intracoastal Waterway near the Kennedy Space Center. While running at cruising speed as well as doing docking maneuvers, helm response was quick and positive, despite the breezes. Sea Ray puts a pair of MerCruiser 8.1S Horizon gas engines, rated at 370 hp each, in the 36 Sedan Bridge as standard power. They moved our test boat along nicely. There was a slight amount of bow rise when coming on plane, but with the view from the high flybridge, this was a non-issue. Midrange throttle response was immediate and strong. I did a few avoidance maneuvers, and the boat showed she could get out of the way quickly.

Gadgets and Stuff
The performance is equally matched by the amenities. The spacious flybridge has bench seats along the starboard side and across the aft, along with a pair of swivel buckets at the helm. Sea Ray offers an optional combination-electronics arch and hardtop that covers the forward half of the bridge. Also, an optional canvas package shades the back half. I would recommend both, as they will keep you out of sun and weather when needed. Sea Ray offers several electronics options for the helm, including a pair of the new Northstar 6000i display panels that were on our test boat. They show you everything you need to know, from charting and radar images to an echo sounder and engine monitoring. You can also have the Raymarine E-120 display system or the Sea Ray Navigator. Even the standard instrumentation is high-tech, with Mercury's SmartCraft(tm) diagnostics display with System View. The cabin also has a host of high-tech wizardry. Instead of a master electrical control panel with rows of breakers and switches, Sea Ray uses a state-of-the-art touch-screen electronic power distribution system. Even the wall switches to control lighting and other electrical functions throughout the boat are touch pads. There's plenty of seating in the salon, with a love seat to port and a settee along the starboard side. The dinette is forward and to starboard, one step up from the main deck. The L-shaped seating from this perch has great sight lines to the outside through the large expanse of glass surrounding the salon. I liked the attractive use of a stainless steel handrail with its tempered glass insert that acted as a low divider to separate the dinette space from the galley. The galley is equipped with separate, under-counter refrigerator and freezer units that operate on either 12 or 120 volts. There's also a two-burner stove with a powered vent, a microwave oven and a coffeemaker, all standard. Sea Ray puts plate and glass storage racks in the cabinets to keep your dishes from falling and breaking. In addition to storage in the cabinets, there's space in a compartment beneath the galley's wood floor. The salon entertainment center sits in a cabinet at the aft-port corner and holds a 20-inch flat-screen LCD TV and a DVD player. The Clarion AM/FM receiver is connected to a six-CD changer and is Sirius Satellite Radio capable. You get a six-month subscription when you buy the boat, which has become a nice perk on a number of other new boats. There are eight speakers throughout the boat, along with a subwoofer in the salon, as well as a digital remote for the radio on the bridge. All this electronic gear is standard equipment.

Sleep Tight
The 36 Sedan Bridge has two staterooms, with the master forward and featuring a full-size pedestal berth with an innerspring mattress. A 14-inch TV/DVD combo comes standard. There are two hanging lockers, shelf storage along the sides and a hope chest seat at the foot of the berth. The second stateroom lies under the dinette along the starboard side. It has twin berths that convert to a queen with a filler cushion. The forward portion of the space has standing headroom and a hanging locker. Sea Ray provides matching pillows, bedspreads and sheets for the boat, all standard. A split head is shared by the two staterooms (plus access from the companionway), with a toilet to port. The shower compartment is on the starboard side. Air conditioning, a generator and a windlass are standard equipment on the 36 Sedan Bridge. You can order the boat with an optional bow and stern thruster, a cockpit ice-maker or refrigerator and a central vacuum system. One more notable feature worth mentioning is the substantial grabrail that runs horizontally across the sliding glass door from the cockpit to the salon. I've seen so many boats with nothing to hold onto, save a small recess and a tiny latching mechanism. Ever try to open the door in rough seas The bar is just one of many examples of how Sea Ray's 36 Sedan Bridge is a well-designed boat.

You cant lose that speed quest even though your gold chains were long ago deposited in the kids college trust. Your wife still looks killer in a two-piece and your teens are bringing dates to the family weekends at the lake. Your next boat du jour will be Bajas new 242 Islander. Our first impression of the cockpit was that its all performance, with custom steering and the Kiekhaefer performance controls. We loved the bolster helm seat and the commanding view it provides whether standing or sitting. The rest of the cockpit is all sexy drag-boat stuff, too, but with a twist. Dual companionways flank the sun pad over the bilge compartment, and a roomy bench seat stretches forward of that. Traffic flows nicely from the wide swim platform to the cockpit even if somebody stops to use the freshwater shower on the swim platform. You wont miss that forward cuddy. Nope. No way youll be ducking down there with the kids on board, and the bow seating that replaced it keeps your kids having fun -- and in plain view. Even with family aboard, the hot-rod crowd will still want to see whats under the engine hatch. Treat them to the full rumble of the Mercury power by flicking the exhaust cutoff switch. At speed, the Islander crested 2-foot chop with style and comfort. At top speed, we had to duck below the windshield and dry the tear glands due to wind or laughter -- whatever. The attitude this boat exudes comes through in its 24-degree deadrise hull. Crisp helm commands were rewarded by crisp response. In truth, we were in love with this boat. It even got us window-shopping for maybe just one tasteful gold chain -- or two, to make a matching set.
